Jutting out of the North Wales coastline, the lively historic promenade that is Llandudno Pier is not to be missed. Extending majestically over the ever-changing waves and flanked with beach cafes, funfair rides, and fun trinket shops, this spot has been entertaining both visitors and natives alike for well over a century.
Soak up the sun, catch live music and entertainment, and sip a beer on the water. And as if that wasn’t enough, this spot grants unravelling sunset views and clean swimming waters at its base all throughout the year. It’s difficult to describe it to somebody who hasn’t been, but if I had to, I’d say that it is charming and modest in comparison with the likes of Brighton or Blackpool.
Enjoyed since Victorian times but still in style – and with good reason! Take this summer to check it out – we promise you won’t regret it!
History of Llandudno Pier
A striking example of 19th century enchantment, Llandudno Pier is famed for its ornamental ironwork and colourful framing projecting out into the Irish Sea. Combining age with beauty, this spot is one of the oldest piers within the UK, as well as one of the longest – though it hasn’t always been this way.
First constructed in 1858, the pier was a modest feat, built out of just 16 wooden piles and measuring 242 feet long. Still, to say that it hasn’t seen much restoration would probably be an understatement.
The pier sustained its first damage in 1879 following a heavy storm, and was reopened with a new landing stage added. Still, by 1969, the landing stage was totally rebuilt using different materials. And more recently, the pier was reconstructed following a devastating fire in 2010 and now is seeing more attention than ever from tourists near and far.
I kind of think that this is one of the things I love about this spot – it’s a symbol of pluckiness and durability. And no matter what, it always manages to maintain its original charm. Visitors flock to the area each summer accordingly to admire its splendid Victorian and Edwardian architecture and take advantage of its stunning viewpoints.
How Long is Llandudno Pier?
Upon its final completion, the wharf measures out at a total distance of 700m. This means that it is now known as the longest Pier in Wales, as well as the fifth longest in the UK. Still, perhaps the most defining feature of this spot is its wonderful and unique architecture, having earned it the title of the “Queen of Welsh Piers”.
Designed by Sir James William Brunlees and Alexander McKerrow way back in the 1870s, this spot is famed for its detailed lattice girders and cast-iron columns. In addition, its characterful wooden decking and delightful kiosks and fairground rides provide a sort of trip back in time. Though this spot is a little worn from years of tourism, I just think that it adds to its charm.
Things to do at Llandudno Pier
Visit the Stalls and Shops
A total favourite for those coming from near and far, Llandudno Pier is studded with colourful Indo-Gothic kiosks to entertain for hours. Of course, I’m well-aware how some people can feel a little put off by the mere thought of souvenir and trinket shops. But frankly, I don’t know what to say; I would defend these stalls to the very death!
For the shopping, for the fun, and most of all, for the authentic seaside experience. And if there’s anything that these elaborate kiosks provide, it’s just that. Take a casual stroll and enjoy traditional rock candy, browse some vintage records, or pick up a gift for your loved ones – what could be better than that?!
Check Out the Arcade
Since its conception, Llandudno has served as a popular entertainment centre for the area. Early attractions included stalls and markets. In addition, the Pavilion Theatre provided a wonderful celebration of the arts right along the beachfront. In fact, this spot has seen performances from the likes of Cyril Fletcher, the Beverly Sisters, Cliff Richard, and many more.
Still, to modernise its image, the pier has had to down a pretty different route: arcades! Yup, it’s true: in 2015 the spot upped its game with 2 arcade centres. Walking along the promenade, you’ll find a wide variety of different games to take your fancy. From table hockey and Pac Man to classic claw machines and pinball, the opportunities are endless. And I would argue that no matter what your age, there’s a lot of fun to be had here.
Walk the Length of the Pier
To truly appreciate this place in all of its glory, I recommend walking its full length – after all, that’s what its best known for! Whether you’re looking to spend some quality time with family or just relax, I recommend making a full day of it – after all, there’s a lot of ground to cover here.
During the day, this spot is bustling with life, with festivals, markets, and kids’ events all throughout the year. Still, my personal favourite time to visit is after sunset, since the pier comes to life with a thousand lights glittering over the sea.
When you reach the very end, grab a drink at Oceans Bar and catch some live music, or simply spend some time checking out those panoramic ocean views – it’s all up to you!
Buy an Interesting Gift from the Crystal Hut
If you’re looking for something a little different, don’t worry – I’ve got you covered! Standing out from the throngs of concessions stands and souvenir stalls, the Crystal Hut is best known for punting jewellery, ritual kits and of course, crystals!
In addition, you can book spiritual readings right on the oceanfront. Even though astrology isn’t particularly my thing, I’ve had a lot of fun in the past browsing the shelves, checking out what’s on offer, and yes – having my future told back to me. Go in with an open mind, and you should have a lot of fun. Thoroughly unusual and most certainly memorable, this one is a total must-do.
Anything Else You Can Find…
When I say that there’s a lot of fun to be had here, I really can’t stress that enough. Here you’ll find a wide array of family-friendly pursuits to complete the quintessential seaside experience. Little ones will love the placid teacups, carousel rides, and of course, choo-choo trains.
Still, the crown jewel of this place has got to be the Big Wheel. Manufactured by the Lamborghini company, this attraction stands at 70 feet tall and grants magnificent views over the briny blue. Even if you don’t plan to take a ride, I highly suggest going to check it out come nightfall, as it glows up with over 10,000 lights.
Though the pier has become well-recognised for its bustling boardwalk, its wonderful natural surroundings are not to be forgotten. If you’re looking to get active, there are many experiences for sports lovers and outdoorsy types alike, including kayaking, sailing, jet skiing and more.
Still, don’t worry if you’re not up-to-scratch – since you’ll be accompanied by trained professionals all throughout your experience. Soak up the sun, feel the salty sea air lap at your ears, and have a blast. Thoroughly invigorating and thrilling for all, we couldn’t think of a better way to spend a day at the beach.
Facilities
Lastly, I should mention that there are no public toilets other than on the pier. Instead, the toilets are about halfway up along the promenade – meaning that it isn’t too far of a walk either way.
The facilities are pretty pleasant and clean – still, they can sometimes run short on supplies, so I’d recommend bringing tissues along with you just in case! In addition, you have to pay to use the facilities, so be sure to have your wallet at the ready!
Combining classic seaside entertainment with plenty of kitsch and character, it doesn’t get much better than Llandudno Pier. A marvel of historic architecture and much-loved North Wales landmark, Llandudno Pier should rank way up high at the top of everyone’s itinerary.
Boasting distinctive Victorian features, idyllic views, and all-important kiosks, it’s almost impossible to be bored here. Complete with traditional seafront fare, old-time fairground rides, and even spiritual healing, this spot truly provides a memorable experience.
Go during the day to cast a line, sip on a nice cold one and watch the sun go down, or grab your camera and an ice cream cone and capture the beauty of the Irish Sea. However you choose to enjoy your time at Llandudno, I’m sure you’ll have a blast!
