Llandudno West Shore Beach: A Complete Guide

When people talk about Llandudno Beach, they often mean North Shore Beach, a beautiful pebbled beach with plenty to offer tourists and locals alike.

However, Llandudno West Shore Beach — managed by the Harbour and Seaboard Service at Conwy County Borough Council — is often forgotten about. But it shouldn’t be. Less busy than the more developed North Shore beach, but with even better views over Conwy Bay and out towards Anglesey, some say West Shore Beach is Llandudno’s best kept secret.

Here’s why.

What is Llandudno West Shore Beach like?

West Shore Beach is, as you might expect, on the west coast of the town, just on the other side of the Great Orme. This sea shore is ideal for those wanting a quieter walk along the shoreline, with picturesque views of the Conwy Estuary and Snowdonia in the distance.

We’re talking clean sand, dunes, clear water and free parking.

Is Llandudno West Shore Beach sandy?

Yes, Llandudno West Shore Beach is a sandy beach, making it popular with holidaymakers.

This is a stark contrast to its northerly brother — the North Shore Beach — instead of stones, you will find endless amounts of sand, with towering sand dunes. The beach itself faces toward Conwy Bay where low tide boasts a large stretch of sand, which is great for both kite-flyers and kite-surfers.

It’s also well-known for its breathtaking sunsets.

Swimming at West Shore Beach Llandudno

The age old question: can you swim at West Shore Beach Llandudno? Short answer, yes, you can swim at West Shore. But, and it’s worth noting, there are no lifeguards on duty, and a large expanse of shallow water before you hit anything worth practising your breast-stroke in. More often than not the sea is too far out to have much of a paddle, let alone a swim.

Are dogs allowed on the West Shore Beach in Llandudno?

Similar to Llandudno North Shore Beach, dogs are unfortunately not allowed in the vicinity during the peak season. This means that from the 1st May through to the 30th September you can’t have your canine friend on the seashore, foreshore or any slope or staircase that leads to the beach.

Honestly, don’t risk it.

It is an offence to allow your dog to enter a dog exclusion area, and failure to comply may just land you with a fixed penalty notice. That’s a £75 fine, and one expensive dog walk.

Fishing at West Shore Beach

Llandudno West Shore is a great place for fishing on mainly clean ground, with occasional rocks. Fish caught around Llandudno include whiting, flatties, dogfish, cod, dabs, mackerel, bass, and codling.  If you’re looking for something a little bigger — a bull huss or thornback ray — consider stopping by Llandudno Pier. Day Fishing Permits are available from the Café at Pier Head at £5.00 per Person.

But, remember, you’ll need a rod licence to fish in Wales, as will anyone over the age of 13 to fish legally.

Top tip: be sure to check the tides for fishing at Llandudno and bite times before heading out to sea.

Where is West Shore Beach Llandudno?

If you’re keen to visit, West Shore Beach lies on the south-western side of Llandudno headland. It’s a 5-10 minute walk from the town centre and also boasts a playground for the kids, a pub and cafes close by. It makes for a great alternative to the hustle and bustle of the North Shore Beach, and is well worth a visit if you’re in the area.
