The North Wales town of Llandudno is popular with both locals and tourists alike. And it’s not hard to see why when we consider the coastline’s amazing beaches and bays.
Sun, sea, and the famous Welsh hospitality. What more could you want?
Llandudno North Shore Beach — also known as Llandudno beach — is the main beach in the town. It is a sheltered sand and shingle beach, featuring a wide promenade known as ‘The Parade’ that follows the curve of the beach all the way to Llandudno Pier.

What Is the Beach Like in Llandudno?
Llandudno North Shore is the largest (and busiest) of the beaches in the seaside resort, set in the shadow of the impressive Great Orme headland. There are a good few sandy sections, but for the most part it’s a pebble beach.
Now, don’t let this put you off.
The beachfront is home to the longest pier in Wales, measuring an impressive 2,295 feet. Off-season, there is nothing quite like a walk above the winter waves beneath Llandudno pier.
Come summer, the promenade comes alive with pure nostalgia. Ever the traditional Victorian pier, you’ll find donkey rides, ice creams galore, live music from the bandstand, and Punch and Judy shows to enjoy by the sea.
Reach the end of the pier, and you’ll be rewarded with great views of the famous Llandudno seafront. Old hotels, beautiful quaint seaside homes and of course, the Great Orme to the West.
Considering a visit to the beautiful beach? Let’s settle a few of the common questions first.
Is Llandudno Beach Dog Friendly?
Across the peak summer months, no, Llandudno North Shore beach is not dog friendly.
From May through to October, dogs are not allowed anywhere on the main beach or any walkways leading to the beach, and this is strictly enforced.
Whilst this is disappointing for the pup-owners among us, it’s great news for those of us looking to enjoy the beach without the worry of trodding in unsightly dog mess. Pup-owners needn’t worry: there is a great area of beach, further from the town, where dogs are welcome all year.
Can You Swim At Llandudno Beach?
Yes, you can swim at Llandudno beach. But, the beach has no lifeguards on duty, so this is worth bearing in mind.
It’s also possible to take sea fishing or sightseeing boat trips — there are regular announcements about boat trips from the jetties. You’ll also find people travel far and wide to spend the afternoon windsurfing and sailing.
While there is plenty you can do at Llandudno North Shore, I would not recommend sunbathing. Learn from my own experiences: when the tide is out, the rocks are covered with algae; and you may face one too many jellyfish for your liking.
Is Llandudno A Private Beach?
No, Llandudno is not a private beach. There’s also no entry cost to visit the beach, which is always great to know. It is however fairly secluded, despite being a busy visitor attraction.
Is Llandudno Beach Safe?
North Shore Beach is a clean, safe and beautiful sandy beach.
It’s a safe place for adults to visit in the summer — provided they behave responsibly in the sea and the surrounding areas. It can become extremely busy in the warmer months, so parents need to be vigilant with young children (but you don’t need me to tell you that!).
While we’re on the topic — pre-warning, combine Llandudno beach with young children and be prepared to spend a pretty penny. With a host of funfair rides, amusements and ice-creams galore on the pier, it won’t be a cheap day out. Safe for you, less safe for your old wallet.
Is Llandudno Beach Sandy?
There are some sandy sections, which are easily accessible via a slipway, but for the most part, Llandudno is rocky.
If you are looking for a sandy beach to fly a kite or build a sandcastle, consider West Shore. A stone’s throw away, West Shore is a very sandy beach, especially during low. It’s also a lot quieter than North Shore (and will most likely save you a lot of money).
How Long is Llandudno Beach?
Llandudno North Shore beach spans 2 miles, a mix of sand, shingle and rock. It’s the perfect length to get your afternoon steps in and have time for an ice cream afterwards.
How to get to Llandudno Beach
Where Can You Park at Llandudno Beach?
Llandudno beach has ample parking, but it’s not free.
Parking on the Promenade at the North Shore costs £3.00 for four hours or £4.50 for ten hours during the summer months. If you’re looking for a free alternative, drive along the seafront (Great Orme behind you, and the sea on your left) until you go hit the Venue Cymru. There, you can park for free. It will take around 25 minutes to walk to the pier from there, but, in the summer months, it’s a lovely walk with even better views.
West Shore beach also has plenty of free on-street parking. You can then catch the Land Train to and from the North Shore if you’re keen to visit.
